Dzhungar Alatau

A little known area with fantastic alternative trekking & hiking options, the vast Dzhungar Alatau mountain range covers over 700 km², lying between the mountain systems of the Eastern Tian Shan and the Altai. The Dzhungar Alatau is divided into the Lepsy river and the Usek river region region.

The highest summit of the range is Semenov-Tienshanskiy peak at the Kazakh-Chinese border (4,622 m). Up to 2,600 m the area is largely covered by semi-desert and steppe, above which there are Alpine meadows. A narrow ridge of the Dzhungar Alatau with sharp peaks and steep slopes has lots of rocky precipices reaching 400-1,000 m.
